Day Camps
Half Day Chess Camps at the
San Diego Chess Club
in Balboa Park
Part of the Balboa Park Educator’s Council collaborative schedule. Spend mornings at the chess camp and afternoons at the Natural History Museum, Fleet Science Center, Aerospace Museum or any of the other participating organizations click here! in Balboa Park. Campers are supervised during lunch and escorted to the afternoon camp by museum staff.
Fifteen Hours of Chess…
Campers are divided into groups: THE KINGS (advanced) and THE KNIGHTS
(beginners), with an intermediate group, THE ROOKS,
during busier weeks. International Chess Master Larry Evans teaches
each group separately, while his staff supervises casual and tournament
play in the others. Snacks and drinks are served between classes. To
end each day, all groups merge for an outdoor, Harry Potter-like team
event on our giant chess set!

Larry’s teaching technique, dubbed THE EVANS METHOD by the United States Chess Federation, is used in dozens of schools through-out San Diego. Featured on The Tonight Show and Inside Edition, The Evans Method makes chess fun for children of all ages and levels.
His cumulative merit system rewards camper participation.
Points earn campers prizes at
the end of each day and a
trophy at the end of each week.
Every camper gets prizes and a trophy!
